HYBRID THINKING
LIVING THE DREAM
Hybrid thinking isn’t the sole preserve of the automotive industry, there are examples of clever thinking all around us. Here are some of our favourites...
Multi-award-winning Hong Kong-based architect, Gary Chang has proved that with a bit of clever thinking, the philosophy of ‘nothing goes to waste' really can come true. His tiny city apartment (only 30.6 m2) can transform into 24 rooms.
Called the ‘Domestic transformer', an ingenious system of tracks allows walls to move and slide, revealing more walls and rooms behind them. For example, when the bed is folded back into its wall, its base becomes a sofa. The wall opposite – containing the TV – can slide forward to reveal the kitchen behind it. The bathroom and the spare bedroom are in the same space, cleverly separated by Chang's innovative thinking.
Aiming for maximum efficiency and user friendliness, Chang's design could be described as a Russian Doll Apartment – each layer of the shell revealing another. Orange-tinted floor-to-ceiling windows and a mirrored ceiling maximise the natural light value meaning the electric lights rarely need to be turned on.
Tight spaces are a thing of the past; in this apartment absolutely no space goes to waste. At all.
