How do electric vehicles work?

Quiet and refined, an electric car, or EV (electric vehicle), runs solely on electricity, using a rechargeable battery to power an electric motor that drives the wheels. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) run on electric power alone. Instead of refuelling with petrol you can simply recharge your battery by plugging into a charger at home or at one of the many public chargers across the country.

Charging

Charging at home is easy, with a dedicated wallbox like Lexus HomeCharge. You can even charge through a domestic socket (although this is much slower). Many workplaces also offer EV charging. On longer journeys, there are thousands of public fast chargers and rapid chargers across the UK and Europe.

Driving

The battery powers the electric motor, turning the wheels and driving the vehicle forward.

Range

Electric range refers to the distance a battery electric vehicle can drive before needing to recharge, influenced by factors such as driving style, conditions and temperature.

Range

How far can an electric car travel?

The distance an electric car can travel before it needs to be charged is known as ’range’.

As with any car, when your range decreases, you will need to refuel, and with an electric car, this means plugging in, at home, work or a convenient stop on your journey.

There are a number of factors that will impact your range, including your driving style, traffic conditions and outside temperature. However, there are steps you can take to maximise your range on every journey.

Charging an electric car

Benefit from the convenience of charging your electric car at home, rather than having to visit a service station. We can help with installing an EV charger which is the easiest, and quickest way to charge at home. You can plug in to a domestic socket, but this is much slower than a dedicated charger.

For longer journeys, it helps to plan where to stop and recharge your car. With a growing number of charging stations available, this is a simple change to the way you travel.

* This service is only used on the owner’s/registered keeper’s drive. You must not leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running whilst stationary on a public road.

REMOTE CHARGING WITH LEXUS LINK+

There is an array of connected services developed for your electric car. When charging at home you can use your smartphone to remotely set the time you want charging to commence, the level of charge or even schedule that charging be completed by a set time. Other remote services include setting the climate control so that it’s just the right temperature on chilly mornings.

How much does it cost to own a Lexus electric car?

Lexus electric cars can offer the advantage of being more cost-effective to run compared to traditional hybrid and conventional cars.

This is especially the case when it comes to charging if you take advantage of dedicated EV charging tariffs. Use our calculator to estimate how much it would cost to run a Lexus electric car, and compare it with another brand too.

EV FAQs

  1. All

If you’re considering an electrified Lexus, the choice depends on how you prefer to drive. Here is a simple guide to how each type operates:

  • Electric vehicle (EV) - Powered entirely by electricity, an EV is charged by plugging in to an external power source.
  • Hybrid - Combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. The battery charges automatically as you drive, so there is no need to plug in.
  • Plug‑in hybrid - Also combines petrol and electric power, but with a larger battery that can be charged by plugging in. This allows for extended electric‑only driving.

A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), or EV, is powered solely by electricity. It produces zero tailpipe emissions and is recharged by plugging into a compatible charging point.

Driving an electric Lexus offers a range of compelling advantages.

Running costs can be lower, particularly when charging at home using a dedicated EV tariff. The drive itself is exceptionally smooth and quiet, delivering a refined and relaxing experience.

With zero tailpipe emissions while driving, electric vehicles also support a more considered approach to mobility. And with the convenience of home charging, visits to public charging stations are typically only needed for longer journeys.

To fully appreciate the experience, we invite you to book a test drive.

Yes. Modern electric vehicles are engineered to be highly dependable, with fewer moving parts than traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.

At Lexus, we take pride in the quality and reliability of every vehicle we produce, including our electric range. This confidence is reflected in our warranty offering of up to 10 years on new and used vehicles, subject to terms and conditions.download (pdf(

The distance an electric vehicle can travel on a single charge, known as its range, varies depending on the model.

Real‑world range will also be influenced by factors such as weather conditions, driving speed and style, as well as the use of heating or air conditioning.

Our range calculator can help you estimate how far you could travel on a single charge based on your typical journeys.

The cost of a Lexus electric vehicle varies depending on the model and specification you choose.

Pricing reflects factors such as battery size, driving range and included features. Flexible finance options and tailored offers are also available, helping you find a solution that suits your needs.

Electric vehicles can be a highly efficient choice for company cars, as Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax is based on a vehicle’s CO₂ emissions. Fully electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe CO₂ emissions, placing them in the lowest tax band.

For the 26/27 tax year, the BIK rate for fully electric vehicles starts from 4%. Choosing a model such as the Lexus RZ as your company car could mean paying as little as £32.20 per month in company car tax^.

^Tax calculation based on a 20% taxpayer, 4%t BIK rate for tax year 26/27, and a P11D price of £48,300 excluding metallic paint. You can calculate BIK payments for your chosen model and grade.

Lexus offers a selection of Approved Used electric vehicles, providing a more accessible way to experience electric driving with complete peace of mind.

For vehicles under 10 years old or with fewer than 100,000 miles, a Lexus Approved Warranty is included each time you complete a qualifying service at an Approved Lexus Centre. This can continue until the vehicle reaches 10 years old or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Terms and conditions apply.download (pdf(

Charging your electric vehicle is designed to be simple and flexible, with options to suit your lifestyle.

  • At home
You can charge using a standard domestic socket, although this is the slowest method. For faster and more efficient charging, a dedicated home wallbox such as Lexus HomeCharger is recommended. It enables features such as scheduled charging through the Lexus Link+ app, allowing you to charge at times when energy costs may be lower.
  • On the go
When travelling, you will find a wide network of public charging points in locations such as supermarkets and retail parks. For longer journeys, rapid and ultra rapid chargers at motorway service stations provide a convenient way to recharge while you take a break.

Home Charging

Public Charging

Charging times vary depending on how and where you charge your vehicle.

At home, a dedicated charger offers a convenient and more efficient option, while a standard 3 pin socket provides a slower alternative.

When travelling, rapid chargers are the quickest solution and are commonly available at service stations, helping you top up your battery efficiently during longer journeys.

Charging at home is often the most cost efficient way to charge your electric vehicle, particularly when you take advantage of specific EV energy tariffs.

The cost of charging at a public charger varies, some car parks offer charging for free, and as with petrol or diesel, charging an EV can cost more at motorway service stations.

The number of public charging points across the UK continues to grow as infrastructure expands.

For the latest figures, you can visit Zapmap.

You can access the Lexus Public Charging Network through the Lexus Link+ app, giving you access to thousands of charging points across the UK.

Find out more about Lexus Public Charging Network.

You can also use tools such as Zapmap to locate nearby chargers, helping you plan journeys with confidence.

Charging times vary depending on your vehicle and home charging setup.

As a general guide, a dedicated home wallbox will charge your vehicle more quickly than a standard 3 pin plug socket.

*Electric range figures are the maximum official (WLTP) test values provided for comparison purposes and can vary depending on factors such as selected grade and transmission, accessories fitted (post registration), driving style, weather conditions, speed, vehicle and battery age and vehicle load. These figures may not reflect your real-life driving results.
