Plug-in hybrids can be charged by plugging them in, which increases the distance they can travel in electric mode only. They switch to hybrid mode when the battery runs low.

Self-charging hybrids automatically switch between electric energy and a combination of petrol and electric energy, and there is no need to plug in.
